CHICAGO (Feb. 12, 2011) – The U.S. Soccer Board of Directors provisionally sanctioned the North American Soccer League (NASL) to operate a Division 2 men’s outdoor professional soccer league in the United States. The sanctioning was approved this weekend at U.S. Soccer’s Annual General Meeting in Las Vegas.

The provisional sanctioning allows the NASL to operate a Division 2 league during the 2011 season. The NASL will need to meet certain requirements defined by the Board of Directors to be granted full sanctioning beyond the 2011 season.

“Division 2 soccer is an important element in the success and popularity of the sport in the United States and we are pleased the NASL will play professional games in their markets this season,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “The Federation’s continued interest is in sustainability and stability at the Division 2 level of professional soccer.”

We’ve worked dillgently over the past several years to implement a new vision for second division and would like to thank USSF President Sunil Gulati and the USSF staff for their leadership, cooperation and support in creating this next chapter for the professional game in the region,” Aaron Davidson, CEO of the NASL commented.  “We are committed to buidling a new second division which will develop markets, players, coaches, referees, executives and adminsitrators and give soccer fans throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico a league and teams to be proud of.”

In player news, the Islanders announced this week two important signings for the 2011 season, the return of Nicholas Addlery  and a new young talent Matthew Bouraee:

Puerto Rico Islanders re-sign Nicholas Addlery

The Puerto Rico Islanders are very pleased to announce the return of stellar forward Nicholas Addlery.  Addlery joined the Islanders in January 2009 making a great impression to the technical staff during pre-season and proving it with his excellent performance during that year’s USL season and CONCACAF Champions League.  Addlery scored two goals against CD Marathon of Honduras to go through to the Champions League Semifinals.  And scored two goals in the Semifinals’ first leg against Mexico’s Cruz Azul.  Then he played on loan with Aguila in El Salvador, and tried out for Mexico’s Cruz Azul, but came back to Puerto Rico in 2010 looking for a Championship and got two; the Caribbean Championship and the USSF D-2 Championship.

In 2011 he re-signs with the Puerto Rico Islanders looking to repeat those titles and go even further in the CONCACAF Champions League.  “Nick Addlery is a very important player for us.  He is a strong forward with a vast experience and excellent definition.  We are very excited to have him back for the 2011 NASL (North American Soccer League) season, the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) Championship and eventually the CONCACAF Champions League”, said Islanders President, Andrés Guillemard.

The Puerto Rico Islanders 2011 NASL season will begin on April 9 when they visit the Carolina Railhawks.  The CFU Championship will initiate in Puerto Rico from April 12-14th when they will face the winner of Walking Boyz, Co of Surinam and Northern United All Stars of St. Lucia.

Islanders sign young talent Matthew Bouraee

The Puerto Rico Islanders recently signed Matthew Bouraee, a young forward from Cornell University’s class of 2010.  Bouraee was starting forward and captain for the New York Red Bulls Academy right after college, recording 9 goals and four assists in just 11 games, leading the country and league. He trained with the first team of the New York Redbulls (MLS), the Sharjah Football Club of Dubai and the Red Bull Salsburg of Austria’s BundesLiga.

Bouraee is a talented prospect and the Islanders are very happy to take part on his professional soccer journey. “We are all very excited to capture the talent and signing of Matt, we look forward to working with him and using the talent he has to help him progress”, said Islanders assistant coach Adrian Whitbread. “We are always striving to improve our team and Matt ticks the right boxes”, he added.

Excited for the 2011 season? we sure are. Go Islanders!!!
